Mum on the Run - Wearing flared jeans and taking style inspiration from Rod Stewart and Bruce Springsteen

Yesterday evening my husband and I went to see Rod Stewart. Whilst I didn't wear this outfit, Rod was sporting a mighty fine white jacket just like mine - although I don't suppose that his cost £30 from Zara a couple of years ago.

Apparently the reviews described it as brilliant but camp and slightly cheesy (his performance that is, not the jacket), which is absolutely true and that's what made it fantastic. The best bit was when Rod, without realising it, was caught on a huge screen eyeing up one of his female musicians - of which, unsurprisingly, there were many. Classic!

I'm sure that some who have followed Style Guile for a while now will remember this outfit from last summer and possibly the one before. Really long, kick flared jeans with a wedge heel are great for giving the illusion of longer legs and additional height and fortunately a solid wedge heel makes it a fairly practical option. These jeans are also a nice change from skinny ones and there's no doubt that a flare on a jean does have the hip slimming effect that it claims. The jeans that I am wearing are from Mango and they come in a 34" leg as standard.

For a similar pair, Mango currently has these jeans for £16.99

To keep everything the right side of smart, I also wore a blue printed silk shirt from Gerard Darel at Bicester, Zara white jacket, Dune wedges and Orla Kiely bag.

As to his outfits, Rod had some great Kermit coloured green trousers, which I guess were a reference to his passion for Celtic. What with several changes of outfit comprising a white jacket, some leopard print, skinny black trousers and a yellow shirt, I think that he may become my new style inspiration. It's a good job that I'm not going to see Bruce Springsteen in concert tonight or it could be double denim and bandanas all the way. Wow, imagine that. On second thought, perhaps it's better not to.

On the Run - At last, the White Jeans get an outing!

I spent most of the day inside today, working away listening to the thunderstorms and the rain.  We had to go out this evening though to look at prospective secondary schools for number 2 so I thought that I had better swap my skinnies and converse for something else.

The thing is, that when it gets to that time of day, unless I am showering and starting from scratch for a proper night out, I don't really feel like putting a dress or skirt on. I feel a bit like I am wearing fancy dress.  In any event, the white jeans haven't had an outing yet this summer and I do like wearing them because there's always a Liz Hurley joke in there somewhere. Seriously, that lady must own every pair of white jeans known to man.

Speaking of Liz Hurley, that whole Shane Warne thing is getting way out of hand.  He looks more like a waxwork of himself than a waxwork would, with that shiny complexion and those overplucked brows.

The jeans are from H&M, the shirt Gerard Darel and the gold T-bars, Carvela.  Given their capacity to shorten and widen, I prefer to wear white jeans long, flared and with heels. Having said that I do have some skinny Gap ones which I wear with flats but their days are numbered because when I bend down, they slide down - and that is so not a good look!

Mum on the Run - Silk and denim

After work today, I did the school run on foot so wore straight leg jeans, converse and a silk printed shirt (which isn't as shiny in real life as it looks here). I like that whole silk and denim thing - a bit of luxury and a bit of scruff often works!

Mum on the Run - White flares

I knew that it would happen one day and today was the day - I was recognised - by the postman!  I was busy minding my own business working from home when there was a knock on the door.  It was the postman with a parcel for me. Having signed for the parcel the postman said to me "I heard you on the Radio the other day" - and there I was standing in the above outfit plus fluffy dressing gown and thick socks to keep warm - what an advert I was for my services!  That plus the squeak of "Oooh, well I never" and me scuttling back inside was most impressive.
So, to today's outfit - white flared jeans from H&M plus a collarless shirt silk shirt and gold wedges.  All a bit 1970's but in a non brown cheesecloth kind of way.  I never have liked brown clothes - I think it has something to do with the old brownie uniform, which I never could bring myself to wear - I just hated that brown and yellow combination.  I suppose the fact that my sister had been expelled for giving the "V" sign to brown owl meant that my brownie career was over before it even started. Ho hum.

A word about H&M jeans - they are a good price and they come in in-between sizes too - so a 27/29 etc.  Definitely worth a try.  The above style is called & Flary.
