On the Run - A challenge for a swimwear brand!

I am going to be touching on a delicate subject this evening, so anyone who is a little squeamish may want to look away now.

Swimwear.  That's the delicate subject.  Or rather my swimwear in particular. I don't know what has happened to my swimming costume recently but it has all gone rather wrong. For a start it has faded and the elasticity has gone slightly.  But even worse - and this is nothing to do with the swimming costume - I have misplaced the extra padding for the bra area - and here's where the problem lies.

[H&M dress, Gap jeans, Dune shoes]

Swimming on my own isn't too bad as I don't need to reveal myself between getting in and getting out the water - and then a strategically placed towel does the trick. However, when swimming with the four year old, that's a different matter.  It seems that I have to get in and out of the pool several times when we are together, either to get a towel to wipe her eyes, or a tissue to wipe her nose and then the towel again to wipe her goggles - you get the idea.

When those situations arise, I have to glance furtively around to check that no-one is looking and then when I get out of the pool, I have to place my arms in such a position to cover myself, that it looks as though I am praying - because of course there is always some 18 year old male lifeguard there, just for good measure.

To convey the gravity of the situation (and gravity has had no small part to play in this delicate subject) imagine.... well actually no, don't. It's just too horrendous.

So anyway, if there are any brands out there who would like to get a 40 plus Mum of three to put one of their swimsuits to the test then I would be more than happy to oblige. In fact, it would be music to my (spaniel) like ears.

p.s. I was going to call this post "A Tale of Two [something that rhymes with "Cities" but which begings with a "T"] - but I thought that was a bit rude!

  1. Looking at you fully clothed I would say 'the lady doth protest too much' (!), however swimwear is tricky for me too. I've often found success with Lands End. Pricy, but very good quality, and there are some nice flattering options (some ikky ones as well though). There's a sale on right now too!
And to be honest, the 18 year old life guard has seen it all, and 99% of it was far scarier than you'll ever be in any kind of swim suit!

    1. Hi Thea,

Thanks for the Lands End tip. Flattering options always sound good to me! Poor 18 yr old lifeguard - scarred for life!

  2. I have just ordered a new swimsuit that I love, by Esther Williams. I'm mid-twenties, but wanted a one-piece for a family vaca with the future inlaws. This suit lives up to the hype-- I love it, it's flattering and I can tie the straps in a bow to tan without lines. I highly (!) recommend it.

  3. I heard something on Daybreak this morning about someone saying women over 40 shouldn't wear a bikini!! What twaddle!! I've seen women at 20 who shouldn't wear one, surely it's all about what you look like and how comfortable you feel. If you're comfier in a swimsuit then that's fine too! No rules I say!!! Btw how do I add a pic onto my profile name? Assume I have to sign in properly online rather than via mobile page?

  5. Depends what you need a swim suit for. For swimming - speedo sculpture definitely the best.

  6. Ha ha - although I think there will be worse cases out there. Just after I had my daughter and mine were not only huge but droopy (now they're just golf balls in socks) I bought a Freya bikini. Freya make underwear so seem to know what they're doing with bikini/swimming tops. You buy by bra size. I'm sure they'd like you to demo for them. Good luck!

  9. I'm in my late 30s, and I get mine from M&S. (Used to buy H&M and topshop pre-children). They are cheap, have tummy control, and always padded in the chest area. My lastest one even have some frilly bits to distract around the bum area. Very nice indeed.
