Fashion dilemma - I would like it but there isn't really the budget for it, so what to do???

This post is all about compromise - tweaking something that you have to make it similar to something that you might like. The shape of a dress can be changed with a belt, a dress can be turned into a skirt with a jumper layered over the top, trousers can be shortened to make them a more stylish ankle length - the list goes on.

I really like this French Connection Rhumba parka (£190). It's the combination of the leather sleeves and the white fur collar. On the downside, or maybe the upside depending on how you look at it, it is a little short (and quite a lot pricey!)

I also really like this Ted Baker fitted parka (£210). Another Mum at school has it and we have had some discussions as to its warmth, with the conclusion that with a jumper underneath, it may be thick enough for the colder weather.  It looks great on her and it is true to its "fitted" description.

I, on the other hand, have this Jigsaw down filled jacket. Now, whilst I know that I am very lucky to have it, it doesn't have the leather sleeves, it's not navy and it doesn't have any fluffy white fur in it. It's also pretty old now but, on the upside, I know for a fact that none of the others are as warm as it - and that is a big consideration for me because even if I bought one of the others, I would still gravitate towards this one. So what to do?

Well there's nothing that I can do about the fact that it doesn't have leather sleeves, or its colour (I don't fancy risk dyeing it) but I can add a little fur to it...

...which I did with this number from Primark. I bought it last week for £20 and I have to say that I have fallen a little bit in love with it. It looks and feels so much more expensive than it is and it's warm, really warm.

So I layered it underneath my Jigsaw coat and whilst I am not kidding myself that it's anything like the other parkas that I like, and it is a compromise, I do like the addition of the fur to it for a change. To me it feels different and we all know what a big part psychology plays in our wardrobe. So for now I am happy with my wardrobe tweak!

  2. It's an excellent way to jazz up and warm up a coat. I've done that with my black fur collar gilet which I wear under the Mango Kate Moss jacket that all the world seems to have bought. The coat/jacket is unlined so the addition of the gilet certainly helps.

I think you're okay with the Jigsaw one - just think next year, you'll be cursing the leather sleeves which are so popular now and wishing you hadn't bought it as you stand there yet again in your Jigsaw number.

  3. I agree with Sue - the leather sleeves on the FC parka will really date... Stick with the lovely warm Jigsaw down one you have.
It's a pity that the fur gilet isn't as long as your Jigsaw coat. If you're going to wear it exclusively with the coat, then how about buying another and doing a 'cut & paste' on the bottom??
Probably not worth it, but it's an idea!

  5. That's a very clever idea. I think your other commenters are right - this time next year, the leather sleeves will look really dated.

Brilliant idea! I agree with previous comments, I think the proof of a great piece of clothing is one which you can rely on to always look stylish and which can be adpated to current trends . You show this with your lovely Jigsaw coat and the cosy gilet above!

  8. Hello to you all and thank you for your comments. I thought that it could go either way - a thumbs up or a big fat fail (as our son says about things). You are so right about the leather sleeves - and I know that I am real wimp in the cold so until I find a warmer one, I will stick with it!

  9. There are some pics on the Daily Mail of Gemma Arterton wearing a furry lined parka - looks fab, as does yours. Loving the purple hat too.

  10. We'll see if I can connect to the studs that you use often that seems to be enough. This is definitely a marked improvement over the 4 S in nearly every regard, and in the United States. 6 scRnd 24: Decrease 1 sc over last 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc repeat around, join, ch 1, turn.
